With a population of over 140,000 people, Eugene is Oregon's second largest city after Portland. The Willamette River runs through the heart of the city

with the McKenzie River joining the Willamette to the north of town.
The city covers approximately 41.5 square miles. The elevation is 426 above sea level and the city's topography features Skinner Butte to the north of downtown and the south, the landmark Spencer Butte, now a 310-acre city park.

The Willamette River is the largest river in the state of Oregon. Discovered in 1792 by Li0eutenant William Robert Broughton of the Vancouver expedition, It flows through nine counties and 19 cities.

The river drains 12,000 square miles of land at an average rate of flow that would fill 175 buildings the size of Portland's tallest skyscrapers every day. The Willamette begins in the high Cascades from Lake Timpanogas southeast of Eugene. The Coast and the Middle Forks join in Springfield and the river flows northward (one of the few major rivers in the US that flows that direction) for nearly 300 miles before joining the Columbia River at Portland. Nearly 70 percent of Oregonians live within 20 miles of the Willamette River.
